The EPF has completed the fourth cohort and is preparing for the fifth cohort. Applications will open soon. In the interim, check out the new EPF.wiki and sign up to be alerted when it launches.
The Ethereum Protocol Fellowship just concluded its fourth successful cohort, which culminated with EPF Day at Devconnect in Istanbul. It culminated four months of intense study, research, and contribution to the Ethereum core ecosystem by a group of talented and motivated fellows. Check out some of the previous posts and repos for further information on EPF.
EPF4 overview
Applications for the fourth cohort commenced on June 2nd, 2023. After assessing over 400 submissions, 35 participants received a stipend. In addition, permissionless participants received five retroactive stipends. Fellows had the opportunity to collaborate with 27 key developer mentors from various client and research teams across the ecosystem over four months. Their work was frequently reported in about 600 weekly updates.
EPF4 Projects for now
In total, fellows suggested and contributed to 35 projects, some of which are still operational. These initiatives not only provide tremendous learning opportunities but also make significant contributions to the Ethereum ecosystem.
The EPF4 repository contains all of the program’s materials. You can track all of the cohort’s activity there, as well as project resources, development updates, and fellow notes. Projects are not merely FOSS contributions, but all work done within the cohort is completely open, forming an integral part of Ethereum’s open research and resources.
However, it is not just about effort and contributions. One of the most important features of the EPF is the opportunity to meet many of the amazing people involved in core development.
During Devconnect in Istanbul, over half of the cohort gathered to participate in EPF Day, a full day of programming with project presentations, panel discussions and social time.
Ethereum Protocol Fellowship
We received some valuable input at the end of cohort 4. Despite the focus on protocol development education during EPF, the learning curve for potential core developers remains severe. Based on this feedback, we launched the EPF study group, a 10-week deep dive into the protocol’s numerous elements, as well as epf.wiki, a collaborative knowledge repository for developers. EPF.wiki has become a hub for aspiring core developers to learn about Ethereum’s technical elements and contribute to the wiki to solidify their understanding.
Next Cohort Coming Soon
As the study group concludes, we’re preparing for the fifth cohort of the Ethereum Protocol Fellowship. Anyone interested in getting involved with Ethereum core development should keep an eye out for the application announcement in early May. To get alerted, join the EPF mailing list.
Meanwhile, you can prepare your application by gaining a solid understanding of the Ethereum protocol (the EPF study group is a great place to start), contributing to open-source projects via your GitHub account, particularly contributions to existing projects in the Ethereum ecosystem, and considering the type of project you might want to work on Ethereum.
